European election: polling stations open in Ireland and in the Czech Republic. Sunday night live on SIR from Brussels After yesterday’s vote in the Netherlands, which opened the consultations for the renewal of the European Parliament (6-9 June), the citizens of Ireland and the Czech Republic are voting today. In the meantime, Brussels is warming up the engines for the election night, from Sunday 9th to Monday 10th June, when the results of the national elections will arrive, and the composition of the next Parliament will start to take shape (2024-2029. SIR will cover the election night in Brussels and will be on live, to give news about the votes, the results in the 27 member states (with a special focus on Italy), the composition of the new European Parliament, the voices of the political leaders on the continental scene, and comments from the EU member states.   The Parliament that is about to close down has completed 467 legislative acts, rules that have to do with the daily life of 440 million European citizens in the widest range of areas: economy and work, rights, environment, research, education, welfare, security, consumer protection, infrastructure, public health… Looking forward, after the announcement of the new members, the first plenary session of the European Parliament will be held in Strasbourg from 16th to 19th July, when the members will elect a president and the other bodies that supervise the Assembly’s work. In September, the European Parliament is expected to vote for the next president of the European Commission, that in the meantime will have been nominated by the European Council (meeting of Heads of State and Government). Between October and November, it will hold hearings with the candidate commissioners and, at the end of the proceedings, will cast its final vote. Valentina Bombelli
