Germany: Association of Catholic Journalists, statutes banning xenophobic and anti-Semitic activities. No to AfD members

The Association of Catholic Journalists in Germany (GKP) has amended its statutes with regard to racism, anti-Semitism and xenophobia. The General Assembly of the Association, which took place in Hanover last weekend, decided that exclusion or refusal of admission would be possible in the future if the person concerned publicly expresses views that go against human dignity. The same applies if the person is publicly perceived as belonging to or supporting organisations and parties that embody such views. By amending its statutes, the GKP adopted the incompatibility resolution passed by the German Bishops’ Conference (DBK): in 2024, the Church declared that ethnic nationalism and Christianity are incompatible. The Bishops explicitly mentioned this incompatibility in relation to the populist and xenophobic party Alternative for Germany (AfD). Those who are publicly recognised as members of the AfD, or support it, can no longer be members of the GKP. GKP President Joachim Frank said: “Our commitment to Christian values and democratic principles has proven itself over more than 75 years of existence”. The amended statutes now contain clear rules for a transparent approach to the incompatibility between xenophobic and racist activities and GKP membership, Frank said. Founded in 1948, the GKP, with about 550 members, is the network of Christians involved in all sectors of secular and church media.
