“Let me repeat: Greenland belongs to the people of Greenland. Our future and fight for independence is our business”. Once again Mute Egede, the prime minister of the Arctic island which is officially part of the Kingdom of Denmark, firmly responded to President-elect Donald Trump’s remarks at a press conference yesterday that he would not rule out using military force to take over Greenland and Panama. As for Canada, Trump himself spoke of the 51st US state. Speaking of Greenland, PM Egede wrote on his social media platforms in the Inuit language, Kalaallisut, in Danish and this time also in English: “While others, including Danes and Americans, are entitled to their opinions, we should not be caught up in the hysteria and let external pressures distract us from our path”. During his term of office, the prime minister is working to achieve the island’s full independence from the Danish crown. “The future is ours and ours to shape”, Mr Egede added, assuring that “every day is spent on working to become independent”. A back-and-forth between Mr Egede and Mr Trump had already occurred shortly before the end of the year, when the president-elect revived his 2019 claim of an alleged American right to take possession of Greenland.
