(Strasbourg) Last day of work in Strasbourg for MEPs meeting in plenary session. After adopting a resolution against President Aliaksandr Lukashenka and his interference in the election process in Belarus by a large majority (429 votes in favour, 205 against and 23 abstentions) yesterday, Wednesday 22 January, MEPs voted again this morning on a number of issues. The motion for a resolution on the systematic repression of human rights in Iran, notably the cases of Pakhshan Azizi and Wrisha Moradi, and the hostage-taking of EU citizens, received strong support: it was adopted by 556 votes in favour, 6 against and 42 abstentions. The case of Boualem Sansal also received a great deal of attention: the European Parliament passed a resolution on the Franco-Algerian writer detained in Algeria with 533 votes in favour, 24 against and 48 abstentions. The actions taken by Russia against Ukraine were also strongly condemned: MEPs voted to recognise the disinformation and falsification of historical arguments used by Moscow to justify its war of aggression against Kyiv. Finally, the vote on the situation in Venezuela following the usurpation of the presidency on 10 January 2025, with regard to the accusations against Nicolas Maduro and the recognition of Edmundo González Urrutia as the legitimate President: 374 votes in favour, 53 against and 163 abstentions.
