(Brussels) To celebrate the European Day of Languages, Iliana Ivanova (in the photo), commissioner for culture, education and youth, stated: “It is encouraging to notice that nowadays nearly 80% of young people can speak at least a second language. But we must go further. our goal is for young people to be able to speak another two languages” as well as their native languages “before the end of their secondary education”. Ivanova pointed out: “I encourage young people to use the mobility opportunities provided by the EU to discover and practise new languages”. The European Day of Languages was first launched in 2001. It is a joint initiative of the EU and the Council of Europe.
