The Bishop of the Diocese of Mostar-Duvno, Mgr Petar Palic, on whose territory Medjugorje is located, has issued a Decree following the release of the Note “The Queen of Peace” highlighting “the need to conclude discernment on the phenomena related to the devotion to Mary “Queen of Peace” in Medjugorje, especially in light of the current situation, the decisions already made on pastoral guidance, and the need to provide some clarifications on the matter”. The text was issued “in light of the norms of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith” of 17 May 2024 and of “Pope Francis’ measures to ensure the spiritual care of the faithful who wish to adhere to this spiritual proposal”, in accordance with the “very positive opinion of the Apostolic Visitor who resides in the place”. Mgr Palic, moreover, says he is “aware of the other positive and not secondary aspects” of the messages linked to the spiritual experience of Medjugorje, “well recalled in the above-mentioned Note”, and acknowledges “the abundance of testimonies of the faithful and pastors on the numerous positive fruits linked to the devotion to Mary, Queen of Peace”. He also acknowledges that “these phenomena widely transcend the Diocese of Mostar-Duvno to the point that the devotion has spread throughout the world”. Therefore, the Bishop gives the Nihil obstat “in order to appreciate the pastoral value and to promote the dissemination of this spiritual proposal, including through possible pilgrimages” and authorises the faithful to prudently give their adherence to the devotion to Mary, Queen of Peace. Mgr Palic, in line with the Vatican Note, also stated that this devotion “does not imply a declaration of the supernatural character of the phenomenon in question”, recalling that “the faithful are not obliged to believe in it”. According to the document, even the priests of the Diocese, “accepting and respecting the Church’s decision, are free to adhere to this spiritual proposal or not”. Lastly, the role of the Apostolic Visitor is recalled “to whom respect and obedience are due for the decisions he will make in the face of situations that may arise”.
