The share of the population aged 25 to 34 with a university or post-graduate degree grew by 1%, reaching 43% of the population in 2023. Only 2 percentage points are needed to reach the target of 45% of the EU population aged 25 to 34 with tertiary education by 2030. As a matter of fact, 13 EU countries have already reached the target: Ireland (63%), Cyprus (62%), Luxembourg (60%), Lithuania (57%), the Netherlands (55%), Sweden (54%), Spain and France (both 52%), Belgium (50%), Denmark (49%), Malta and Poland (both 46%), and Latvia (45%). The lowest percentages of people with a degree, doctorate or postgraduate degree were recorded in Romania (23%), Hungary (29%), and Italy (31%). An interesting fact emerging from the data released by Eurostat today is the reverse gender gap, with 49% of women having tertiary education compared to 38% of men.
