Romania: Oradea, Bishops’ Assembly. Situation of Ukrainian refugees, missions, Synod and Jubilee on the agenda

The situation of Ukrainian refugees, the activities of the Pontifical Mission Societies in Romania and of the Caritas Romania Confederation, the Synodal Process, the 2025 Jubilee, and the reorganisation of the commissions are some of the main items on the agenda of the Plenary Assembly of the Romanian Bishops’ Conference, which begins today in Oradea, in the northwest of the country. Hosted by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Oradea until 15 May, the Assembly brings together the Roman Catholic and Greek Catholic Bishops of the Church in Romania, plus the Bishop of Chisinau (Republic of Moldova) Mgr Anton Cosa. At the opening of the meeting, Archbishop Giampiero Gloder, who was appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Romania by the Pope on 23 February, and Mgr Tuomo T. Vimpari, Counsellor to the Nunciature, will also be present. In the afternoon of the first day, the Bishops will celebrate a Mass in honour of our Lady of Fatima at the Roman Catholic Cathedral of Oradea. It will be presided over by Mgr Gloder. On Tuesday, a Mass will be celebrated in honour of Saint Ladislaus, founder of the city, in the ancient church of the Citadel of Oradea. On 15 May, a Byzantine-rite Mass, presided over by the Greek Catholic Bishop of Oradea, Mgr Virgil Bercea, will be celebrated in Haieu, near Oradea, in the church dedicated to the visit of John Paul II to Romania, which took place twenty-five years ago. On Wednesday morning, the Bishops will meet Father Arturo Sosa, Superior General of the Jesuits, who is visiting the communities of the country.
