A contest is open until 9 April to select media professionals from several categories (print media, TV media, photographers, reporters, journalists, etc.) in the Council of Europe member states who have stood out in reporting on the lives of Roma people in Europe in an “ethical” way. The contest, called “Journalism Excellence Awards”, aims to promote “a positive image of Roma and marginalised communities in the media, especially with regard to women and children”, the Council of Europe explained in a statement. The ultimate goal is to contribute “to the European objectives of promoting an image free from stereotypes and positive examples in order to drive a change in people’s perception”. A prize of 2,000 euros will be awarded to the winners, residing in a CoE member state, who have stood out in one of the following five categories: photojournalism, investigative journalism, interview, global event, young journalists. The award ceremony will take place in Strasbourg on 18 June 2024. The regulation and application form are available on the Council’s website.
