Today, Vice-President for Values and Transparency, Věra Jourová, is hosting a high-level event on women in public life. The focus of the meeting “lies on the phenomenon of women leaving the public space due to the constant risk of violence and hate directed at them, including online”, a release says. The event “also aims to highlight the importance of gender equality in decision making. Its goal is to identify challenges of political participation of women, particularly in the context of the upcoming European elections, and to come up with a catalogue of concrete solutions to support women in public-facing positions, including through the engagement of media platforms, regulatory bodies, and the political parties themselves”. President von der Leyen will open the session via video message, followed by a video message from the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola and introductory remarks by Vice-President Jourová. There will be many guest speakers and lots of messages. Two panels will notably focus on ‘Women in politics’ as well as ‘Women in journalism and activism’.
