“Potential social media manipulation during the election process, the exploitation of Christian faith as a political vehicle and the alarming threats against the press” are a source of concern, as stated by Signis – World Catholic Association for Communication – today in a relaese, speaking of the recent political developments in Romania. The Catholic NGO agency, whose mission is “using media to promote human dignity, justice and reconciliation”, says that the actions reported by the Romanian authorities “not only erode the integrity of democratic values, they also undermine fundamental rights, including freedom of expression and independence of the press, principles that will always be essential for an informed, ethical society to thrive. This echoes the greater efforts made to protect the dignity and resilience of democratic systems, as exemplified by the long-standing efforts made by the Church for transparency, dialogue and the common good”. Signed by President Helen Osman, the release points out that “the Catholic Church supports the importance of free and responsible media as vital means to promote truth and transparency”. In addition, Signis expresses “solidarity with the Romanian population at these difficult times and reiterates its unshakeable commitment to the fundamental principles of democracy, human dignity and freedom of expression”.
