EU Parliament: Sakharov Prize awarded at the plenary session. Debates on Syria and Georgia

(Strasbourg) The plenary session of the European Parliament is going on in Strasbourg, and today the day has been opened by a debate on the situation in Syria; a resolution will be voted on by the MEPs at a forthcoming plenary session. However, the highlight of the day has been set at 12.00pm: during a ceremony in the hemicycle, Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament, will award the Sakharov Prize 2024 to María Corina Machado, leader of the democratic forces in Venezuela, and to president-elect Edmundo González Urrutia, “representing all Venezuelans inside and outside the country fighting to restore freedom and democracy”. In addition, during the day the MEPs are expected to discuss with the Executive Vice President of the EU Commission, Virkkunen, about how the increasing disinformation and disinformation on social media, especially on TikTok, are threatening the independence and fairness of the election in Europe. At 12.30pm the plenary session will appoint the new European Ombudsman out of a shortlist of six candidates. Other issues will include: the riots and repression of peaceful protests in Georgia; the final vote to postpone the enforcement of rules against deforestation (the European Parliament is prepared to approve the postponement by one year of the enforcement of the new EU legislation that will prevent products such as cattle, cocoa, coffee, palm oil, soy, wood, rubber, coal and printed paper sourced from deforested land from being sold on the European market).
