Despite Syria’s changed situation, it is really too early to speak now of deportations, as suggested or requested by the Interior Minister and other political forces in Austria. This has been pointed out in a joint release by Caritas and Diakonie. The chief of the International Aid Programmes at Caritas, Andreas Knapp, stated: “As long as fights go on and the humanitarian and security situation in the country is so unstable, Syria will not be a safe country to go back to yet. A return to a completely destroyed region is not possible for humanitarian operators”. In addition, many Syrian refugees “are perfectly integrated in Austria and have a built a life for themselves. They have been living and working in Austria for many years, so expelling them, regardless of the situation in Syria, would be a breach of human rights”. Diakonie is on the same side too: clear conditions apply to procedures for withdrawal of asylum status, the Protestant humanitarian organisation explains: the country of origin must be permanently safe and a return with dignity must be possible. “It is still impossible to assess all this from today’s perspective, and monitoring further developments in Syria will need some time”.
