Germany: more security and anonymity for users of the pastoral advice website of the German Church

A clear layout, nice colours, user-friendliness and cutting-edge technology: this is how the pastoral service of the Catholic Church is described at www.internetseelsorge.de. The digital conversation service is available to anyone, regardless of their confession or religion, for email or live chat pastoral conversations in an anonymous form, free of charge and with no obligation. “We founded internetseelsorge.de twelve years ago as a low-threshold service for people looking for support and advice in difficult life situations or having questions about religion, faith or the Church. We have partnered with some dioceses that provide their pastoral workers and we are also working at further developing the service. In addition to the digital services available in the dioceses and associations, we regard ourselves as a common, inter-diocesan pastoral platform”, the director of the Catholic office for missionary pastoral care (Kamp), Hubertus Schönemann, explains. More user-friendliness and implemented data security technology: “Protection and security of the data of those who ask for anonymous advice must be absolutely guaranteed. For us, privacy is very important”, Schönemann points out. The service meets all the requirements of the Ecclesial Data Protection Regulation and the General Data Protection Regulation. “The need for live chat conversations has remarkably increased after the COVID pandemic. And right now, in the autumn and winter months, we are having a particularly busy period of conversations”, Schönemann states.
