It is called wjd@home, “World Youth Day at Home”, the national meeting of young Dutch Catholics due to take place from 24th to 26th January 2025. It is an event which, as explained by Żaklina Melis, head of the Young Catholic project, “for quite a few years has allowed young people to meet each other, to celebrate and discover their faith together”. The news next year will be the venue: from Ameland, one of the islands north of the country, it will relocate to the Emmaus Centre in Helvoirt. The reason for such change is that the new venue “is located in the midst of the country so it is easier to reach for young people”. In addition, it offers the opportunity “to hold multiple workshops at the same time and, since it has a chapel, the Eucharist can be officiated there and young people can stay on and reflect in silence and prayer on what touched them”, Żaklina explains. The meeting will be focussed on the common celebration of faith, connections with new people, and an exchange of experiences on being a Catholic in today’s world. There will also be some “knowledge acquisition” on topics such as the tradition of the Church, ethics, the Jewish roots of Christian faith, and Sacraments. “Whether you do much or little with your faith, you are welcome! Hopefully, after this weekend, you will be more deeply rooted in and even more passionate about your faith”, says Zaklina, as she calls young people to register. The meeting will be in two languages, Dutch and English.
