Films awarded over the years by ecumenical juries have their own festival now: “Filmikon”, starting in Bucharest on January 18th. “It is a cultural event that completes the religious programme of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. We want to provide a space of dialogue on Christian and human values, starting with films. The screenings will be followed by conversations with prominent figures from different confessions”, Adriana Răcășan, a young Romanian filmmaker and deputy president of Signis Romania and Signis Europe, explains to SIR. The festival, which will take place in two cinemas of the Romanian capital and in St Joseph cathedral, will be opened by “Perfect Days”, awarded by the ecumenical jury in Cannes in 2023 and previewed in Romania. More films will follow that won awards in Miskolc, Hungary (“Freedom”, 2023), in Cannes (“The Old Oak”, special mention, 2023; “Capernaum”, 2018) and in Berlin (“God exists, her name is Petrunija”, 2019; “Tótem”, 2023). On January 21st, the cathedral of Bucharest will host a screening with live music: the silent film “The passion of Joan of Arc” (1928), with the soundtrack played by Romanian organist Alexandru Catau. “Filmikon” will be closed on January 25th by the Romanian film “Lettres à mon frère en exil” (2009), dedicated to the Blessed martyr Vladimir Ghika. The festival is a project by Signis Romania and is organised in partnership with the archdiocese of Bucharest, the French Institute in Bucharest and several cinema institutes.
