In September 2023, 98,240 people applied for international protection for the first time in the EU member states. The number, revealed today by the European statistical office Eurostat, marks a 10% increase compared with September last year. The largest group of asylum seekers (19,220) consists of Syrians, followed by Turks (10,200) and Afghans (9.215); then, there have been 5,290 Venezuelans and 5,230 Colombians. 67% of such applications were granted by Germany (27,885), Spain (13,395), France (13,100) and Italy (11,930). In fact, the highest proportion, based on the population of each country, is that of Austria (87.6 asylum seekers per one hundred thousand people), followed by Cyprus (79.3) and Greece (74.7). The lowest proportion was that of Hungary (0.03). In addition to these nearly one hundred thousand applications, compared to September, asylum applications have been submitted by 4,055 unaccompanied children, mainly from Syria (1,575) and Afghanistan (980), headed for the Netherlands (910), Germany (775), Austria (705), Bulgaria (490) and Greece (380). The number of asylum applications should also include the 5,265 people (-20% less than in September 2022) who submitted a second application or more.
