“Demographic challenges within the EU in the light of economic inequalities and development gaps” is the title of a “position” that the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) has recently approved, which highlights that “family-focussed investments should be a priority, as they lay the grounds for the future”. Today, Vincenzo Bassi, president of the Federation of Catholic Family Associations (Fafce), expressed support for EESC’s opinion and also suggested that “investments in family policies should not be included in the calculation of public debt”. EESC’s position – requested by the Croatian presidency of the European Union, which put demographic challenges as one of the priorities of its six month’s rule – showed unquestionable figures about Europe’s demographic decline: Europe’s population, compared with the world’s one, decreased from 27% in 1950 to under 10% in 2017. “Hopefully, the other EU institutions and all the member states too will be as brave in submitting ambitious plans for the future of our families”, Bassi commented: “In the current pandemic, this has become a really urgent matter”.
