(Brussels) “The withdrawal agreement will not be renegotiated”: the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, reiterated the EU position on Brexit to leave no room for doubt beyond the English Channel. The politician from Luxembourg told MEPs gathered in Brussels for their plenary assembly that “with less than 60 days to go until Brexit”, which is a “wrong decision”, “the withdrawal agreement is the best and only agreement available”. We said so in November, we said so in December and January. Yesterday’s vote” in the House of Commons “does not change the situation”. He explained: “We cannot reintroduce a hard border between Ireland” and Northern Ireland, the backstop is there to “prevent this, as a safety net”. And he went on to say: “The House of Commons has so far said it is against many things, but it is unclear what they actually want”. We remain open to dialogue, Juncker said, “while also preparing for any scenarios, including a no-deal” and disorderly Brexit. Finally, he said, “I am optimistic, we should continue to work together, the EU and the UK, for a new partnership”.
