“It is an important step: both Athens and Skopje have made remarkable concessions. But it is too early to claim victory; it is just the first stage of a process whose final chapter is not well known”. Those words were spoken by an expert in Balkan questions and a journalist of Bloomberg TV Bulgaria: Nikolay Krastev. It was his comment for SIR, made after Greek PM Alexis Tsipras and Macedonian Prime Minister Zoran Zaev reached an agreement on the name “Republic of North Macedonia”. In his opinion, “the difficult task of persuading their fellow countrymen that such agreement is necessary, and will be good for everyone is up to Tsipras and Zaev”. “Macedonians know that they cannot join the EU without Athens’s go-ahead”, he said.
