Syria: Card. Zenari to Vatican News, “Listen to the cry of poor people”

Card. Mario Zenari

The Apostolic Nuncio to Syria, Cardinal Mario Zenari, made a new appeal for Syria. “Listen to the cry of poor people, of children”, he said in an interview with Vatican News, inviting all parties involved to place “this before your consciences” in your efforts for peace. Almost seven years since the start of the conflict, many regions of the country are still ravaged by war. Even last night in Damascus – he said – “it was difficult for us to sleep because we could hear the noise of gunfire and machine guns in some peripheral areas”. The Cardinal is concerned about the news that “fierce fighting” is going on “in the rural area east of Damascus” as well as in other areas, on a battlefield that now includes the northern border “following Turkey’s military intervention”. Cardinal Zenari, however, still hopes for a truce. And calls on international negotiators to act with urgency. “Try to do everything you can, at least to achieve a cessation of violence, a ceasefire, and then a political solution to the conflict”.
