“It is with praise to God, great joy and satisfaction” that the Ecumenical Patriarchate announces the “successful” completion of the work of the Unifying Synod. This is according to a statement released by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople yesterday. The task of the Unifying Synod, convened on Saturday 15 December in Kyiv, was to establish the new Orthodox Autocephalous Church of Ukraine and to elect its Primate. Metropolitan Epiphanios of Pereiaslav and Belotserkovsky, 39, was elected. Until now, he has been Patriarch Filaret’s right-hand man at the Patriarchate of Kyiv. The statement released by the Phanar informs that the newly-elected Primate phoned the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, asking the prayer and “blessings of the Mother Church for fruition of his primatial ministry, which starts under good auspices”. Bartholomew invited His Beatitude Epiphanios to concelebrate the Divine Liturgy at the Phanar on the great feast of Theophany (6 January). On that occasion, he will deliver to him the “Tomos” of establishment of the new sister Autocephalous Church.
