Pope Francis and seven members of his entourage have returned from Latvia, carrying in their suitcases a pair of handmade wool socks knitted by the women who participated in a contest launched by Caritas: 135 pairs of socks and 15 pairs of gloves were received. The most beautiful pair was donated to the Pope and other seven pairs were given to his assistants. Caritas Latvia also announced that, as previously decided in the framework of this initiative, the remaining pairs of socks have been packed and are ready to be dispatched to Ukraine. They will be donated to “the people who bear the brunt of the armed conflict with Russia”. As Egita Volyns’kyi, head of office in Riga, explained, the hand-knitted works will be dispatched to Auzstan, in the diocese of Kharkiv, where the local Caritas office provides assistance to about 2,000 people. “These people receive medical and legal assistance, food and everything they need for their daily lives”.
