The new General Secretary of COMECE, Father Patrick Daly, who was elected by the COMECE plenary assembly last November, has officially taken office on 1 February. The Irish priest, 61, worked as a translator and interpreter at the European Commission before he was ordained priest in 1991. Between 1992 and 2002, besides being a member of the International Affairs Committee of the English Bishops’ Conference, Fr. Daly accompanied the English bishops liaising with COMECE, thereby becoming familiar with the Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Community. From 1999 to present, he served as a parish priest in Wolverhampton (diocese of Birmingham). The Irish priest succeeds Mgr. Piotr Mazurkiewicz, who served as a secretary from 2008 to 2012. On 20 February, a press conference to officially introduce Fr. Daly will be held in Brussels.
