United Kingdom: assisted dying, the law now in the home stretch. Wilson, the archbishop of Southwark, makes an appeal against it

The threat is “not just physical but moral and spiritual too. We are duty bound to stand up and challenge this attack on human dignity on all fronts”. These are the words spoken by the Archbishop of Southwark, John Wilson, in his message posted on YouTube and on social media, in which he asked Catholic devotees and British citizens to contact their local MPs and ask them to vote against the new legislation on assisted suicide that has been published today. The legislation will be voted on by Westminster Parliament for the first time on November 29th. The legislation would give mentally-competent terminally-ill adults the right to put an end to their life. There is a good chance it will be passed because the MPs are free to vote their conscience and the legislation is supported by the British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer. However, the law will be voted against by the Health Minister Wes Streeting and by the Ministry of Justice Shabana Mahmood as well as by the leader of the Liberal Democrats, Ed Davey. Just today, from 05.30pm to 06.30pm British time, the English Bishops will kneel down at the Blessed Sacrament for an hour during their plenary meeting, will pray for the dignity of human life and will ask God for the new legislation to be turned down, and they invited priests and devotees all over the United Kingdom to join them.
