Cardinal Vincent Nichols, Catholic Primate of England, has invited Catholics in England and Wales to join him and the Bishops for a holy hour on Wednesday, 13 November, from 5:30pm to 6:30pm, to ask God that the new legislation legalising assisted dying be rejected by the Westminster Parliament. Catholics in the UK are thus called upon to join him and the Bishops who, on that date, will kneel in front of the Blessed Sacrament to pray for the dignity of human life, during the plenary meeting that will take place from Monday 11 to Thursday 14 November. The new legislation will be debated by Westminster MPs on Friday 29 November; this will be followed by the first in a series of votes unless the legislation is immediately rejected. The law would give terminally ill adults, still capable of understanding and wanting, the right to obtain from doctors the help they need to die. “When you are praying, please remember those who offer such care and accompaniment to people facing their last days and hours. Especially pray for those who work in palliative care – nurses, doctors”. “They do a wonderful job”, Cardinal Nichols said in his message released by the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales. The same communiqué calls on Catholics in the UK to write to their MPs to ask them to vote against the new legislation and suggests readings, prayers and reflections to be used on 13 November.
