United Kingdom: Welsh Parliament against assisted dying. Mgr. O’Toole (Cardiff), “the law would threaten the most vulnerable”

“I was very pleased to see that the majority in the Senedd voted against a motion which encouraged assisted suicide legislation. Support of the most vulnerable in our society, so clearly threatened by the proposed law, is good to see”. With these words, the Catholic Archbishop of Cardiff, Mark O’Toole, welcomed the decision of the “Senedd”, the Welsh Parliament, to reject a motion which asked the Cardiff Government to endorse the legislation that would give the go-ahead to assisted dying. The new legislation, which is starting the second stage of its parliamentary course, the so-called “second reading”, when it will be discussed by the British Parliament on November 29th, is proposed by the Labour MP Kim Leadbeater. The provision entitles terminally-ill adults of sound mind in Wales and England to have doctors help them to die. It is very likely to be approved. Actually, the legislation is supported by the Labour Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, who decided to let his MPs free to vote according to their conscience. Some Conservative MPs too would like the law to be changed. Right now, the Code of Criminal Procedure classes assisted dying as a crime punishable with up to 14 years’ imprisonment.
