UK: preparations for Harvest Fast Day. Fasting and fundraising for local projects in developing countries

Bring your parish together for a dinner full of hot dishes inspired by various countries around the world such as “Jollof Rice”, an African dish consisting of rice cooked in a tomato and onion sauce, or “Chicken Adobo”, a chicken recipe from the Philippines. Or organize a quiz night, charging a ticket for each team or asking for a donation. Or float the idea of a dancing night featuring salsa or other music. These are some of the ideas proposed by CAFOD, the Catholic Agency for Overseas Development of the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales, to raise money for Harvest Fast Day, which is celebrated this year on Friday, 4 October. “Twice a year, in October and also during Lent, we invite families, parishes and also individuals to fast or eat less for a day and give the corresponding amount to CAFOD which invests it in local projects in developing countries”, explains Lucinda Devine-Kennedy, spokesperson for the Agency of the English Bishops. “In 2023, thanks to Harvest Fast Day, we raised, £1.2 million”, that is, €1.4 million. “Our website (https://cafod.org.uk/fundraise/family-fast-day) is also full of other suggestions on how to raise funds. To encourage donations, we tell the story of Daniel, from the Democratic Republic of Congo, who was able to become a carpenter thanks to our help”.
