“How can interreligious engagement help to re-invigorate the European democracies?”. This is the question that the conference organized by the Council of Europe at the Federal Ministry for Economic Co-operation and Development in Berlin will try to answer tomorrow, Tuesday 14 May. After the institutional greetings that will open the event, Heiner Bielefeldt (former United Nations Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief) will deliver a keynote address, which will be followed by contributions from various religious leaders. The theme will then be addressed from three different perspectives: “What mutual efforts can be taken by religious leaders to help combat the democratic backsliding that we now see throughout Europe?” (Fabio Petito, Professor of Religions and International Affairs, University of Sussex); “Does the method and practice of interreligious exchange, based on dialogue and a spirit of compromise, have something to offer in an increasingly polarised democratic public sphere?” (Cesare Giacomo Zucconi, Secretary General of Sant’Egidio). And finally: “How can interreligious dialogue contribute to the strengthening of a culture of democracy? And in what practical ways can interfaith engagement help to reinvigorate key democratic institutions at local, regional, and national levels?” (Jean-Christophe Peaucelle, Advisor for Religious Affairs, French Ministry of Foreign Affairs). The concluding remarks will be entrusted to Fabio Petito.
