The 68^th plenary assembly of the Croatian Bishops’ Conference, chaired by its President, Mgr Drazen Kutlesa, Archbishop of Zagreb, has begun at the Bishops’ Conference headquarters in Zagreb today. Also attending are the Apostolic Nuncio, Mgr Giorgio Lingua, and delegates from several Bishops’ Conferences (Italy, Slovenia, Hungary, Montenegro, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina). In his opening remarks, Mgr Kutlesa referred to the recent Declaration “Dignitas Infinita” from the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, stressing that it “clearly speaks out against abortion, euthanasia, surrogacy, the gender theory, wars, poverty, the difficult situation of migrants, violence against women, sexual abuse, and trafficking in human beings”. He added that the Declaration condemns “the distortion of the concept of human dignity, which some have used to justify the arbitrary creation of new rights, forgetting that rights and dignity do not stem from subjective desires or preferences”. Among the topics that the Bishops will address are the preparations for the 2025 Jubilee and for the 1100^th anniversary of the national Church Councils in Split under Croatian King Tomislav. Mgr Kutlesa announced that discussion will also focus on Catholic schools and other educational institutions, the pastoral care of foreigners and Croatian veterans, and on ways to address several social and pastoral challenges, particularly addiction to gambling. The plenary will continue until 11 April at noon when the usual press conference is scheduled to take place.
